It sounds hideous, but it's just because it's unusual. It's clearly from the late 19th or early 20th century, and was some kind of sorting table. Both the leather and wood are very worn, but in a good way.
I always get compliments on what a wonderful piece it is. The leather seat is torn and will need to be repaired, but that will be both easy and inexpensive.

No, actually it doesn't sound hideous... it just looks hideous. Where, I wonder, is our friend displaying this piece in his/her house to get compliments on it? "Oh here, sit on my... oh, actually don't sit on that part since the seat is torn. Actually, don't sit there either, the wood is a little splintery. Just a tad. Oh dear, have you gotten a tetanus shot recently?"
